At Urban Hardwoods, the salvage, milling, drying, design, and fabrication is all done one tree, one log, and one table at a time. Our highly skilled craftsmen keep the entire process in-house to ensure quality at every step. When you buy from Urban Hardwoods you're buying furniture that's solid, sustainably sourced, and has a story to tell.
Urban Hardwoods furniture is handcrafted in Seattle using locally salvaged wood sourced from Northwest neighborhoods. In fact, ninety percent of our materials are sourced within a 20-mile radius of Seattle, WA. When trees require removal due to hazard or declining health, we consult with tree services to salvage them and give them a second life as high quality furniture that’s truly one-of-a-kind.
After the trees are salvaged, they’re transported and cut at our sawmill in South Seattle. Though our furniture is modern in design, the technology behind our powerful mill has changed very little in the past 100 years.
Finished slabs are sorted and labeled before being taken to our warehouse where they will air dry for 18 to 36 months. Removing excess moisture reveals the true character of wood and grain, allowing our designers to make the best compositional choices.
When it comes to design, we're inspired by nature itself. The color, figure, and shape of each slab inform our designs. All the knots, unusual grain patterns, and color variation – the "imperfections" that mainstream manufacturers cut away and discard – are the features that give each piece of Urban Hardwoods furniture its unique character that can never be replicated.
