FAQs

HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY URBAN HARDWOODS FURNITURE?

Caring for your Urban Hardwoods furniture is easy. The finish requires no waxing, polishing, or other regular maintenance. A soft damp cloth is all that’s needed for normal cleaning. Add a little mild soap if necessary, but please do not use aggressive cleaning products, abrasives, or excessive moisture.

The finish we use is very durable and will withstand many years of normal use. We highly recommend that you do not expose your tabletop to high heat or prolonged moisture contact, as these will damage the finish.

Many types of furniture are susceptible to damage if moved by dragging, especially over a thick carpet. Please use two people to safely move large pieces. With kind treatment, your Urban Hardwoods furniture should outlast us all.

Some additional detail:

It is best to dust with a damp rag using long strokes parallel to the grain direction. Add a small amount of mild soap if needed to clean up oily spills.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing. Scrubbing our satin or matte finish with a soft cloth could polish a glossy spot into it, or with an abrasive material a dull spot.

Avoid polishes, oils, and all solvents. These occasionally react with the finish or create a high-gloss surface.

Avoid high heat, especially moist heat. Remember, this applies to boxes straight from the microwave, pizza boxes and other hot carryout containers.

WILL YOU REFINISH MY URBAN HARDWOODS TABLE?

Urban Hardwoods is able to offer refinishing services only for warranty work on our own furniture.

For all other refinishing work (life happens) we will be happy to refer you to professionals in the Seattle area whose work we recommend.

In other regions, please find a high-quality professional refinisher experienced with solid wood. We will be happy to consult with them about our factory finishing.

WILL YOU SALVAGE MY TREE?

Urban Hardwoods does not cut down the trees we use in our products. We partner with dozens of tree service companies in our region to salvage logs from trees that have to be removed.

The trees we can use are limited by species, size and location.

We salvage trees from the greater Seattle area.

We salvage hardwood species including elm, maple, madrone, walnut, sycamore and oak if they are at least 24” in diameter at chest height (slightly too large for most people to hug).

We occasionally salvage softwood species cedar and sequoia if they are 30” in diameter or larger at chest height.

If you have a tree that is dead, dying or hazardous and must be removed, and it meets the criteria above, we would love to hear from you. Please email trees@urbanhardwoods.com with pictures, the tree species, diameter, and location.

WILL YOU MILL MY LOG / FINISH MY SLAB?

We’re sorry, we do not offer custom milling services or finishing of material that has not passed through our thorough drying process. We’re at capacity with our own material and cannot offer these services.

DO YOU GIVE TOURS OF YOUR WORKSHOP?
